A Look at the Pros and Cons of Environmentally Friendly Cars
Electric cars run using electric motors powered by electrochemical cells; these cars use built-in battery packs. Thus, they run on electricity, rather than on conventional sources of energy like petroleum and gasoline. These cars have become increasingly popular in recent years.
With all of the new and stylish environmentally friendly vehicles available today, many consumers are contemplating whether or not a “green” vehicle is a good choice. Although there are obvious benefits to “green” cars, there are also some aspects to owning an environmentally friendly vehicle that you may need to evaluate. Below you will find a list of some of the pros and cons of owning an electric car. If you are thinking your next vehicle should be “green,” then here are a few things you should consider:
Pro – The most obvious advantage is that environmentally friendly cars have lower emissions than traditional cars and use power sources that either occur naturally or reduce the need for petroleum.
Con – The first disadvantage that you may learn of when considering a “green” vehicle is the cost. Environmentally friendly vehicles are often thousands more than traditional vehicles, which may make their upfront costs unaffordable for some consumers.
Pro – If you can get past their initial high cost, there are tax incentives for those that purchase a “green” vehicle. In some instances, the total of these credits equaled dollar for dollar deductions for some tax payers.
Con – These vehicles are usually high maintenance. Insurance for environmentally friendly cars tends to run a little on the expensive side. But, this is because repair and replacement parts for these vehicles are more expensive.
Pro – If your frequent commute involves stop and go traffic found in major cities and heavily populated areas, then you will quickly see the gas benefits of these vehicles. This is because the gas engine of hybrid vehicles shuts off when you are at a red light and the electric motor kicks in once the gas pedal is pressed.
Con – Unfortunately, if your commute requires оpen highway driving, it may take a lot longer to see any real gas savings. Typically, in hybrids, only the gas engine operates during long periods of open highway driving.
Pro – A number of states and other countries are making these vehicles attractive, thanks to the growing perks offered, such as free or special parking and hybrid specific driving lanes.
Con – There are safety concerns associated with hybrid vehicles. It has been stated that the electric battery will shut off in the event of an accident. This is not a definite response. So, there is concern of how the electric battery will react to serious impact.
Pro – While most of the advantages and disadvantages on our list are based on hybrid electric vehicles, there are other “green” vehicles, such as bio-ethanol vehicles that are also available, giving you options in pursuing an environmentally-friendly vehicle.
Con – The availability of fueling stations for bio-ethanol and similar “green” vehicles such as biodiesel vehicles may be difficult to find, depending on where you live.
. There are pros and cons to all of life’s major decisions, and whether or not you should choose an environmentally friendly vehicle is no different. Still, the lasting benefits of environmentally friendly vehicles far outweigh the disadvantages. And, with advances in the technology of “green” vehicles, the disadvantages are decreasing with each new model.
